Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass – it’s about learning to dance in the rain. Vivian Greene

Welcome! I have started this blog as part of my recent journey learning to live with, and manage, a challenging and relatively rare illness: gastroparesis.

It helps me to have a record of what has helped and to hear about what has worked for others facing their own difficulties or problems: physical, mental and/or emotional. During challenging moments, when I am experiencing a bad flare up and an increase in symptoms, I find it useful to focus on what has improved, what has worked, what is going well: this blog is a useful reference point for me to turn to when I am feeling vulnerable, isolated or anxious. It helps me gain a better perspective. Isolation is, I think, one of the toughest elements of living with a chronic illness but it helps to know that you are not alone. You will not be going through the exact same experience as me, and the terrain of my journey may be very different to yours, but knowing that you are not alone – that we all experience moments of despair or isolation for a multitude of different reasons – helps.

My hope is that something I post on this blog will resonate with you and perhaps help you too.

The last couple of years since my diagnosis have been a roller coaster ride for me but the key take away point has been learning that life – unedited – is a glorious and profound recipe of imperfect perfection. Every day will bring unexpected moments – some joyful, some unwanted, some unexpected – and, whilst we may have little or no control over these daily occurrences, there is always an element of choice in how we respond and react.

This brings me to my next point: what is this blog about and who is it for? Although started as a response to illness, this blog is essentially about health and well-being. It is not a place for competitive suffering or negative comparisons. Nor is it a place for setting impossible goals, unachievable perfection or ‘one size fits all’ solutions. I offer no magic bullet or miracle cure: what works for me might not work for you. This blog is about small wins rather than big victories. My steps forward have to be realistic and sustainable. I want to savour my journey: as long as I continue to move forward, I don’t really mind where I go or the route I take. I hope you enjoy this blog enough to join me and keep me company on the way.
