Purpose and Direction

“Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.”
—John F. Kennedy

What do we do when we don’t know what to do? When we are uncertain of the path we are supposed to take, the next right thing to do is often difficult to discern.

We must first and foremost be true to who we are. We follow our journey. We honor what our core beliefs are, what we desire. We keep in mind how the course of our life affects our friends, family, partners, etc., but we also must remain true to ourselves.

A husband and father may choose to change careers because in his heart he knows he has to do it to be true to himself. He has a purpose and direction. Things may be more difficult for a while, but it’s something he knows will be better in the end for his life.

When we don’t know what we want we have a very difficult time determining what efforts and decisions need to be made. When we are seeking a college degree, for instance, there is a plan set out and we know what classes we must take to get our diploma. There are options as to when we take certain classes and we have choices about electives. This is an easier path to follow than our journey of life because it has a written plan.

On our path, we have wide open opportunities and we must determine what our purpose and direction is; what our final goal is, oftentimes to determine our next move. If we want to get to point C, we must go through A and B. If we have not determined our destination point in some form, then we cannot set sail to get there.

We shouldn’t always set our goal too specifically, but we can have a purpose and direction in which to travel. Without that, we are too scattered, and all of the efforts and courage in the world will have us doing little more than spinning in circles.

Determine purpose and direction and then put all you have into it.
